How an Education Coach Can Unlock Potential in a Changing World
13 January 2025

I found this video really interesting: How AI and the Future of Learning Are Shaping Education by Bcubed raises important concerns about the current state of education systems. It highlights two significant challenges—the rigidity of existing structures and the gap between identifying student potential and taking timely action. These systemic issues call for creative, personalised approaches to learning, and that’s where an education coach can make a real difference.

Scotland has made several reforms to its education system, including the introduction of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE), which emphasizes flexibility, personalisation, and skills development. There's a stronger focus on personalised learning, allowing for tailored teaching to meet individual needs. However, while Scotland has made efforts to change, the current system simply doesn't meet the needs of many young people. This video is primarily based on an Indian perspective, but I continue to see children in Scotland struggling to keep up with what is being taught, and this is doing them a disservice.

How an Education Coach Can Help:

Personalised Learning

Coaches offer tailored learning strategies that focus on individual strengths, interests, and goals. This personalised approach helps students see the relevance of their education to their future aspirations.

Flexible Learning Models

Unlike traditional schools, which adhere to strict schedules and curricula, an education coach can adapt to the needs of the student. This flexibility allows students to explore different subjects and develop skills at their own pace.

Future-Oriented Guidance

Coaches stay up-to-date on emerging fields and career trends, guiding students toward opportunities that may not be covered.

Another issue raised in the video is the gap between identifying student performance early and taking appropriate action. Teachers can often predict which students are likely to excel or struggle. However, systemic inertia, resource constraints, and bureaucratic hurdles prevent timely interventions.

As a result, students who could benefit from immediate support are often left waiting until problems worsen or become harder to resolve. By the time help arrives, the student may have already disengaged from learning or lost confidence in their abilities.

How an Education Coach Can Help:

Immediate, Individualised Support

Education coaches provide real-time feedback and personalised support, ensuring that students receive the help they need as soon as challenges arise. This proactive approach prevents small issues from escalating into major obstacles.

Continuous Progress Monitoring

Coaches work closely with students to track progress and adjust learning strategies as needed. Unlike traditional assessments, which occur at fixed intervals, coaching offers continuous feedback and guidance.

Building Confidence and Resilience

Coaches focus on more than just academics. They help students develop emotional resilience, overcome setbacks, and build a growth mindset. This holistic support fosters self-belief and encourages students to stay engaged in their education.

Goal Setting and Accountability

Through personalised goal setting, coaches help students stay motivated and accountable. Whether it’s mastering a subject, improving study habits, or preparing for a future career, coaches ensure that students have clear, actionable steps to achieve their goals.

Why Personalised Coaching Matters

The video underscores the need for systemic reform, but meaningful change at an institutional level can take years, if not decades. In the meantime, education coaches offer a practical solution for students navigating a system that may not fully meet their needs. By providing tailored learning experiences, timely interventions, and holistic support, education coaches help students unlock their full potential.

Final Thoughts

The future of education is uncertain, but one thing is clear: flexibility, personalisation, and timely support are essential for helping students thrive. While systemic reform is necessary, students can’t wait for institutions to catch up with the times. Education coaches fill this gap, empowering students to take charge of their learning, build confidence, and prepare for a rapidly changing world.

Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood by Lisa Damour
18th December 2024

Navigating the Teenage Years: Why Untangled is a Must-Read for Parents of Girls

The teenage years often leave parents feeling confused, frustrated, or even a little helpless—especially when a once-close relationship with their daughter feels distant or strained. In Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood, psychologist Lisa Damour delivers invaluable advice, helping parents understand what’s going on beneath the surface as their daughters grow up.

A Practical Roadmap for Parents
Damour identifies seven developmental phases that mark a girl’s journey to adulthood, shedding light on emotional, social, and cognitive changes. The book is filled with relatable scenarios and actionable strategies to navigate common challenges. Whether it’s coping with mood swings, resolving conflicts, or knowing how to respond when daughters push parents away, Damour’s advice is both accessible and reassuring.

One mother described the impact of Untangled on her relationship with her daughter as transformative. Previously, confusing blow-ups left her feeling at a loss. After implementing Damour’s tools and suggested conversations, their bond strengthened—not in a childish way, but in a deeper, more understanding partnership.

How Education Coaching Can Help
While Untangled provides essential tools for parents, the teenage transitions it outlines can also benefit greatly from additional support. This is where the role of an education coach can make a real difference. Education coaches work one-to-one with teens, providing a safe and supportive space to explore challenges such as academic stress, confidence issues, or navigating friendships and social changes.

For example, through focused coaching sessions, an education coach can help teens:

  • Develop resilience and coping strategies for emotional ups and downs.
  • Build self-awareness to better understand their values, strengths, and goals.
  • Learn study skills and time management to reduce academic overwhelm during critical school transitions.
  • Address communication challenges with parents, helping them find healthier ways to express feelings and resolve conflicts.

The personalized nature of one-to-one coaching ensures that teens feel seen, heard, and supported during what can often be a turbulent stage of life. As Damour explains, many teenage behaviors are about finding independence—but that doesn’t mean they don’t need guidance. An education coach can provide that bridge, helping teens confidently navigate transitions while building trust and collaboration with their families.

Empathy Meets Science
What sets Untangled apart is its blend of psychological insight and empathy. Damour explains how teenage brains are wired, helping parents recognize that some behaviors (like pulling away) are not personal but a natural part of growing up. Understanding this shift empowers parents to offer support in ways that resonate, without escalating tensions.

A Universal Resource
While Untangled focuses on raising teenage girls, much of its wisdom applies to teenagers in general. Despite American references, readers in the UK can easily adapt Damour’s insights to their own family dynamics. One highlight? Practical role-play examples for handling tricky conversations—because sometimes, the how matters just as much as the what.

Partnering Together for a Brighter Future
For parents preparing for (or currently navigating) the teenage years, Untangled is a must-read. Coupled with the support of an education coach who can provide one-to-one guidance, this book serves as a powerful tool to strengthen the connection between parents and teens. Together, they can overcome challenges and help young people develop into independent, confident individuals—ready to thrive in both their personal and academic lives.

The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt
29th October 2024

I recently listened to The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, a book I think is incredibly important for teens and their parents today. Haidt dives into how smartphones and social media are reshaping childhood—and not always for the better. It's such a relevant topic that I plan to listen to it again to catch everything I might have missed.

In my coaching sessions, I often see firsthand how phones can fuel anxiety. Teens today are dealing with pressures that many adults didn’t grow up with—social media comparisons, constant notifications, and often, a pull between online life and real interactions. Haidt talks about how childhood has shifted from being “play-based” to “phone-based,” and it's hard to miss the impact. I’ve coached teens who feel the weight of presenting a perfect image online, leading to anxiety and self-doubt. Boys share how gaming consumes their time, while girls often struggle with self-esteem issues made worse by social media.

Haidt calls out parents who may be overprotective in the physical world but unaware of what their kids face online. In coaching, I hear stories of teens dealing with cyber-bullying, encountering harmful content, and comparing themselves to unrealistic ideals. These aren’t just side effects—they’re serious issues affecting mental health.

One thing that really struck me is Haidt’s view of phones as “experience blockers.” Instead of forming real friendships, teens are chasing likes and followers. Haidt suggests setting boundaries and raising the "internet adulthood" age to protect kids. These ideas seem like steps in the right direction to help teens balance digital and real-world experiences.

In a world where screens aren’t going away, The Anxious Generation is a call to rethink our approach. Teens need support to navigate the digital landscape, and coaching can be part of that. With open conversations and the right tools, we can help young people manage tech use and build resilience in both their personal and academic lives.

Through coaching, I work with teens to tackle the challenges that smartphones and social media bring. By helping them understand their own habits, set boundaries, and build confidence, they learn how to manage technology in a way that works for them, not against them. My approach is about guiding them to find balance—so they can enjoy their online connections without letting it take over their lives. Together, we work on practical strategies to manage distractions, boost self-esteem, and navigate social pressures, all while building skills that will serve them well beyond school.

4 Ways to Help Your Teenager Study
15th October 2024

These 4 tips offer straightforward strategies to help teenagers improve their focus on studying, emphasising clear, manageable steps that reduce overwhelm and enhance productivity.

1. Encourage Goal Setting

Encourage goal setting by helping teenagers break down their study tasks into clear, achievable objectives. This approach gives them a sense of direction, keeps them motivated, and helps them track their progress, making studying more focused and productive.

2. Encourage Power Breaks

Encourage short power breaks during study sessions to help teenagers recharge and maintain focus. Brief breaks, like a 5-minute walk or stretch, can boost energy levels, reduce mental fatigue, and improve concentration when they return to studying.

3. Encourage Habit Building

Two habits for success are establishing a routine and prioritising tasks. A consistent daily routine helps teenagers develop discipline and stability, making it easier to focus during study time. Prioritising tasks enables them to tackle the most important assignments first, building momentum and confidence.

4. Control Distractions

Controlling distractions is essential for effective studying. Encourage teens to create a dedicated study space free from interruptions, limit phone use, and set specific study goals. By minimising distractions, they can enhance concentration and improve their overall productivity..
